Who We Are

Empowering Architectural Creativity

We believe building materials should empower creativity, not limit it.

Our mission is to give architects, designers, and contractors the freedom to build with confidence through systems that unite beauty, innovation, and American craftsmanship. Every Lumabuilt product is engineered to balance architectural expression with long-term performance, ensuring aesthetics and durability work together.

Three Decades of Innovation

Our story began in 1996 with Rollfab’s pioneering single-skin aluminum panel system. That early innovation laid the foundation for decades of advancement in architectural aluminum manufacturing.

Over the years, Lumabuilt has expanded its expertise through the development of multiple aluminum product systems designed to support modern architecture.

These include:

  • Visage ACM Sheets: high-quality aluminum composite material panels
  • Mosaic Planks and Battens: sublimated architectural extrusion systems
  • Fabricated ACM Systems: engineered rainscreen and cladding assemblies
  • Lumaplate Plate Systems: solid aluminum plate solutions for demanding environments

Each milestone reflects our commitment to enabling bold design through durable, high-performance aluminum systems.

FAQs

Will Mosaic Planks warp on long spans, such as 24 feet?

No. Mosaic Planks are manufactured from high-quality aluminum and inspected to meet strict tolerance standards for twist, bow, straightness, flatness, and angularity according to Aluminum Association guidelines. When installed according to Lumabuilt system specifications, Mosaic Planks maintain their shape and appearance even on long spans.

What are aluminum battens used for in architecture?

Aluminum battens are architectural elements used to add dimension, texture, and shading to building facades and interior spaces. They are commonly used for exterior cladding, soffits, ceilings, privacy screens, sunshades, and decorative wall systems.

Because aluminum battens are lightweight, durable, and low maintenance, they are often used as a long-lasting alternative to wood battens in modern architecture.

Are aluminum battens better than wood battens?

Aluminum battens offer several advantages over traditional wood battens. They resist warping, rot, insects, and moisture damage while requiring significantly less maintenance. When finished with sublimated woodgrain coatings, aluminum battens can replicate the appearance of natural wood while providing the durability and longevity of metal.

This combination makes aluminum battens a popular choice for exterior architectural applications.

What are the thermal expansion properties of Mosaic Planks?

Mosaic Planks are manufactured from Aluminum Alloy 6063-T6, which has a thermal expansion coefficient of 12.3 × 10⁻⁶ in/in/°F. Lumabuilt systems are engineered to accommodate aluminum expansion and contraction through concealed trims and system design.

What substrate should Mosaic Planks or Battens be attached to?

Mosaic systems must be installed on a structural substrate, such as steel framing, concrete block, plywood sheathing, or wood supports. Fastener types and installation methods are typically specified by the project architect.

Can Mosaic Planks be installed on ceilings?

Yes. Mosaic Planks can be installed on ceilings when attached to a solid structural substrate. They are not designed for suspended ceiling grid systems.

Can Mosaic Battens be used structurally?

No. Mosaic battens are architectural elements only and are not designed to carry structural loads.

How are woodgrain finishes applied to Mosaic products?

Lumabuilt uses a proprietary powder coating and sublimation process to transfer realistic woodgrain patterns onto aluminum surfaces. This finishing method creates the appearance of natural wood while maintaining the durability and weather resistance of aluminum.

What is aluminum composite material (ACM)?

Aluminum Composite Material (ACM) is a lightweight architectural panel made of two aluminum sheets bonded to a composite core. ACM panels are widely used for building facades, rainscreen systems, and architectural cladding because they provide strength, rigidity, and design flexibility while remaining lightweight.

What is the difference between ACM panels and metal panels?

ACM panels consist of two thin aluminum sheets bonded to a core material, while solid metal panels are made from a single piece of metal. ACM panels are lighter and easier to fabricate for large façade systems, while solid metal panels or aluminum plate systems provide greater impact resistance and structural durability.

Can ACM panels be curved?

Yes. ACM panels can be curved depending on panel thickness, fabrication techniques, and the required radius. Curving capabilities vary by project and fabrication requirements.

What happens to Visage ACM panels during a fire?

Visage ACM panels use a fire-resistant mineral core composed of non-combustible materials. The panels meet several industry standards including ASTM E84, ASTM D635, and ASTM D129. They have also been NFPA 285 tested when used with Lumabuilt A1000 rainscreen systems.

What is a rainscreen cladding system?

A rainscreen cladding system is an exterior wall assembly that creates a ventilated cavity between the cladding and the building’s weather barrier. This cavity allows water to drain and air to circulate, helping prevent moisture buildup and improving building envelope performance.

What are the advantages of aluminum cladding systems?

Aluminum cladding systems offer several benefits for modern architecture. They are lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and highly durable while providing extensive design flexibility through a wide range of colors, finishes, and panel shapes.

Aluminum cladding systems also require minimal maintenance and can last for decades when properly installed.

How do ACM rainscreen systems manage water?

Lumabuilt ACM rainscreen systems use a drained and back-ventilated design that allows water entering the cavity to drain while airflow helps dry the wall assembly.

Can ACM rainscreen systems be customized for architectural designs?

Yes. Lumabuilt fabricated ACM systems can be customized to accommodate unique panel shapes, layouts, and architectural details. Custom configurations are typically developed during the Design Assist phase of a project.

How long do aluminum cladding systems last?

Architectural aluminum cladding systems are designed to last several decades with minimal maintenance. High-performance finishes such as powder coating and sublimated coatings help protect aluminum surfaces from corrosion, weather exposure, and fading.

Are aluminum cladding systems fire resistant?

Aluminum cladding systems can be designed to meet strict fire safety requirements when used with appropriate core materials and tested wall assemblies. Fire-resistant ACM panels and properly engineered rainscreen systems help meet modern building codes and fire performance standards.

What are the advantages of Lumaplate aluminum plate systems?

Lumaplate is a solid aluminum plate system designed for durability, impact resistance, and architectural performance. Plate thickness options include 0.080″, 0.090″, 0.100″, and 0.115″, making Lumaplate suitable for demanding building envelope applications.

When should aluminum plate be used instead of ACM?

Aluminum plate systems are often used when projects require greater durability, higher impact resistance, or stricter code requirements than ACM panels can provide.

What finishes are available for aluminum architectural cladding?

Architectural aluminum systems are available in a wide range of finishes, including powder-coated solid colors, metallic coatings, anodized finishes, and sublimated woodgrain finishes. These finishes allow architects to achieve both modern and natural aesthetics while maintaining the durability of aluminum.
